Wahoo Fishing Flipper II Madeira Big Game Fishing

Right at the start of the Wahoo season we have our good friends Bob and Nigel visiting us again.  A real pleasure to invite them here again and have fun times with them fishing for species they have not landed before.  The guys are fishing two days with us and as Madeira is not having the best of seasons with regards to Big Game Fishing and the Blue Marlin so we have tailored there days here to make sure they get the most of what the fishery here has to offer at this time.  So with a game plan in mind we set off for day one ………… mission catch fish.

Today is going to be a Mixed Fishing day and we started with a couple of hours bait fishing. We had a great time and lots of fish were caught.  We landed  over 12 diferent species, several types of Bream, Snappers, Triggerfish, Grouper, duckfish and more. Using light tackle every fish gives a good bend in the rod.

Everyone is happy.

Time to change it up!  So we put away the bottom fishing rods had a quick clean up and brought out the Penn 30’s amd 50’s and within a few minutes we had our lures out in the water.

So today we are hoping to attract a nice Wahoo to bite as they should be arriving in the waters around the island any time now.

Enjoying the sunshine and scenery everyone is relaxed watching the lures  and then BANG!  and we are hooked up!

Nice big wahoo on and taking line….This is going to be the biggest fish of the day for sure.  Nigels quick to take the rod and wind this beautiful Wahoo to the boat.  Expertly done.

50lb Wahoo and a first for our angler Nigel.

Mixed Fishing Trip Flipper II

Today we have been out with some of our friends and ex UK anglers on a mixed day fishing trip. We started today with a bit of trolling on the way down to the fishing grounds. We ran some lures way out back of the boat in the hope of picking up a barracuda or a wahoo. No bites unfortunately but it was still early in the day. We pulled in the lures and got out the light tackle and fished some baits over a few of our favoured spots. The aim of the bait fishing today was to try and catch as many different species as we could and size was not important! So we had a little species comp and the bites where plentiful. We lost count at about 9 species but it was great fun. The anglers certainly had some nice Snapper and Triggers for the BB

Some nice fish for supper too. Steven Cater here with his wife Deb enjoyed it a lot. We are now trying for tuna ….. we know where they are but will they bite??? So today we have used the light tackle and the Big Guns.

This evening we were in and amongst the Big Eye Tuna busting all over the place. Birds going crazy and fish feeding on the surface all around us.

Unfortunately we didnt get a hook up but it didnt spoil anyones day. We all had a great time and we are set to have another go tomorrow.

Family Bottom Fishing 4 Hour Trip

Another family on a bottom fishing trip. Looking for a few fish for a BBQ tonight. What a lovely family they were too. They booked up for a 4 hour trip and being new to fishing had low expectations. Spent the first 15 minutes getting them used to the rods and reels and showing them how to feel the bottom which is rocky to say the least. They were soon on it and bringing fish to the boat with every drop. New to fishing they did really well. They caught as many fish as they wanted for the family BBQ and had fun catching and releasing many more. We totalled 10 different species during the trip.

Wahoo Competition Calheta 2021

Flipper II competed yesterday in the first Wahoo competition held out of Calheta Marina. The Crew aboard taking part included Captains Neil French and Micky French along with our wireman Claudio and the angler was good friend fron the UK Mr Steve Cowley.  In total 9 boats from the marina entered the competition mainly the Big Game Fishing boats and also a couple of private boats.

We left the marina and headed West in good sunshine and calm seas and were quickly pulling our chosen lures in the hope of landing a nice big Wahoo.  With the weather being kind we ventured all the way round the point of Madeira island and fished all the way round to the North side to Porto Moniz.

Around 12.20pm we got our first strike of the day quickly followed by a second.  Two fish on and Steve worked well to get both fish to the boat.  Unfortunately the bites were not from Wahoo but two very nice Pompano Dolphinfish (mahi).

A little later on we get another strike and again it was not the target species for the competition but Steve landed a nice Barracuda.

It was soon time for lines in and we headed back to the marina.  As it turned out none of the boats had managed to hook up and land a Wahoo so we were excited that at least we had landed 3 nice fish knowing that only one other boat had landed 2 small fish and another boat had caught 1.

Despite these 3 nice fish the organiser decided that as no Wahoo were caught the first place would go to the heaviest fish of the day and so Flipper II took 2nd place in this comp.

We congratulate with winner!!  Well done on your win with your 8lb Grouper. (Sorry I dont have a photo)

Also congratulations to 3rd place winners which was our friends fishing on their private boat Taka Tuka.

Tuna Time

Lovely young couple and their first experience at big game fishing. Being a pike fisherman this 180lb tuna gave our young angler a bit of a work out. Pulling lures on our 130lb class Shimano rods and reels it took just 40 mins to get this beautiful Big Eye Tuna to the boat. They left us with huge smiles which is what we aim for on every trip.  We look forward to seeing you guys again soon.

Tuna are around the island all year and we especially see lots of the March/April and again in August/September.  Check our availability on our calender or check out our facebook page.
